When decorating with images was forbidden in Islamic eras, creative artisans decorated with words, letters and abstract shapes. I definitely would consider such shapes in the decor of my house. Would you?
How did calligraphy become such a strong part of Arabic (and even recently western) decors? In pre-Islamic times, there was evidence of the existence of books and written language. During the time of the caliphs, the letters pointing system and diacritic marks were invented as more and more people embraced the Arabic language with the expansion of the state. Indeed, using letters without points caused confusion and mispronunciation of words and sentences and the pointing system was invented for improve the clarity of the language. Scripts of the era however lacked discipline and were mainly used for administrative purposes. It is under the Umayyads that writing in the Kufic script became a profession. And during the Abbasid era, Arabic calligraphy flourished and more styles were invented such as the Naskh and Thuluth. (Source: Bibliotheca Alexandrina- Calligraphy Center)
So where do we see Arabic calligraphy in home decors? Do you own Arabic calligraphy on a necklace or on a piece of jewelry? I do, it is part of my personal decor. The decor of the Taj Mahal for example was mainly made of floral shapes and Arabic calligraphy. In Hagia Sofia in Turkey, large round medallions with inscribed Islamic names were placed on columns in the Islamic era and remain there until today. Even modern day houses have elected to use calligraphy in their decor either on walls, on furniture or simply using inscriptions in frames. I even ran a search online and I was surprised to find many US retailers selling Arabic calligraphy for home decor. I saw Arabic calligraphy in the form of stickers or wallpapers that you can peel and place on your wall. I even found kitchen towels decorated with Arabic calligraphy. Towels and textiles have been constantly decorated with calligraphy and geometric shapes in the form of embroidery. Faithful to the tradition, Tamarindie has used Arabic calligraphy on towels for special orders and commissions and also as part of its embroidered collection.
Where does modern-day Arabic calligraphy come from? Today, calligraphy is used by contemporary artists either for the sole purpose of artistic creation art or for various applications. In Beirut for example, 392Rmeil393, an art gallery in Gemeyzeh in Beirut, exhibited the work of Yazan Halwani, an artist specifically known for a style he calls “Calligraffiti”. The Art Fair organized in Abu Dhabi at the end of November 2013 demonstrated the prevalence of Arabic letters in art and we have taken photos for you in another article. In the old cities of the Levant, you can even find traditional calligraphers that are effectively small merchants earning a living by writing words, announcements and sentences on pieces of cloth that people hang across streets. The Financial Times has spotted Arabic calligraphy in business and corporate logos and has written an article on companies requesting calligraphy for their corporate identities and on agencies and calligraphers that work creatively with them.

عندما كان التزيين بالصور ممنوعاً في العصور الإسلامية، استعمل الحِرفييّن والمبدعين الكلمات والحروف والأشكال المجردة للتزيين. وانني بالتأكيد استعمل هذه الأشكال في ديكور بيتي. وماذا عنك؟
فكيف اصبح الخط العربي جزءً مهماً جداً من الديكورات العربية ( و مؤخراً الديكورات الغربية)؟ في عصور ما قبل الإسلام، وجدت ادلّة على وجود الكتب واللغة المكتوبة. في زمن الخلفاء الراشدين، اخترع نظام تنقيط الحروف وعلامات التشكيل وتزامن ذلك مع تبني المزيد والمزيد من الناس اللغة العربية مع توسع الدولة. وذلك لان استخدام الحروف دون نقاط تسبب بالصعوبة بالفهم وباخطاء لفظية واستنبط نظام تنقيط الحروف لتحسين وضوح اللغة. لكن خط هذا العصر كان يفتقد للنظام وكان يُستعمل الخط لاغراضٍ ادارية بصورة اساسية. وما اصبح الخط ونظامه مهمين الا في العصر الاموي حيث اصبحت الكتابة بالخط الكوفي مهنة. وفي العصر العباسي، ازدهرت الخط العربي واخترعت المزيد من الأساليب مثل النسخ و الثلث . المصدر : مكتبة الإسكندرية ، مركز الخط العربي)
إذن، أين نحن نرى الخط العربي في الديكورات المنزلية؟ هل تملك قطعة مجوهرات عليها خطٌ العربي؟ انني املك خطاً عربيًّ على قلادة وهو جزءٌ من ديكوري الشخصي. على سبيل المثال, ان ديكور التاج محل يتضمن بصورة اساسية أشكال الزهر والخط العربي. في آيا صوفيا في تركيا ، وُضعت ميداليات كبيرة محفورة بأسماء إسلامية على الأعمدة في العصر الإسلامي وهي موجودة هناك حتى اليوم. حتى البيوت الحديثة اختارت استخدام الخط العربي في الديكور امّا على الجدران او على الأثاث أو ببساطة عن طريق استخدام الخط في الإطارات. ايضاً عند اتمامي بحث على الانترنت, فوجئت بالعثور على العديد من تجار التجزئة في الولايات المتحدة يبيعون الخط العربي لديكور المنزل. رأيت الخط العربي على شكلِ ملصقات أو ورق جدران يمكن قشرها وتلصيقها على الحائط. حتى انني وجدت مناشف المطبخ مزيّنة بالخط العربي. ان المناشف والمنسوجات قد زُينت باستمرارٍ بتطريز الخط و الأشكال الهندسية. ولنكون اوفياء للتقليد، لقد استخدمنا في تامارندي الخط العربي على المناشف او البشاكير للطلبات الخاصة و أيضاً كجزء من المجموعة المطرزة
ومن اين يأتي الخط العربي الحديث هذه الايام؟ يثستخدم الخط من قبل الفنانين المعاصرين إمّا بهدف الإبداع الفني أو لتطبيقاتٍ عديدة. في بيروت على سبيل المثال،يقوم المعرض الفني 392Rmeil393 وهو معرضٌ فني في شارع الجميّزةفي بيروت بعرض أعمال يزن حلواني ، وهو فنانٌ معروف لنمطٍ يسميه الكليغرافيتي. وفي ابوظبي, لقدنُظّم معرضُ فن أبوظبي في نهاية نوفمبر 2013 حيث ظهر استعمالٌ قويٍّ للاحرف العربية في الفن و اتخذنا لكم صوراً معروضة في مقالٍ آخرٍ. في مدن بلاد الشام القديمة، يمكنك أن تجد خطاطين تقليديين وهم فعلياً تجار صغار يعيشون من خلال كتابة الكلمات والجمل الإعلانانية على قطع من القماش التي تُعلق في الشوارع . وقد اكتشفت صحيفة الفاينانشال تايمز الخط العربي في مجال العلامات الدعائية المميّزة وكتبت صحيفة الفاينشل تايمز مقالاً عن الشركات التي تطلب الخط العربي لتمثيل هوياتهم التجارية وعن الوكلات والخطاطين الذي يعملون مع هذه الشركات بشكلٍ مبدعٍ
